Home Decor: DIY Painted Pumpkins For Fall

Home Decor: DIY Painted Pumpkins For Fall

Fall has always been my favorite season.

I love the cooler weather, warm sweaters, apple cider, and the falling leaves. Every year, I decorate my home for fall, inside and out. My House Painter helped me to get the best painting services , I love it so much that I plan on having a fall wedding in the near future! As I was rummaging through my fall decor, I realized that I have a lot of orange faux pumpkins and they don’t really mesh well with my home decor now. So today, I’m showing you how I refreshed some new and old pumpkins to match my style! These painted pumpkins are quickly going to become a yearly staple.

Things You’ll Need:

Prep + Prime

The first thing I did was clean off my pumpkins and faux leaves with a wet cloth or paper towel. For any new pumpkins, I removed stickers and any sticky residue so the paint would adhere properly. For the stems, you can tape them off to protect them but a lot of foam pumpkins have removable stems and will pull out very easily.

My spray paint is a paint & primer so I don’t have to start with a first coat of primer. If you opt to use different paint than me, make sure you buy a primer first – this will help the paint stick to the surface and you won’t need as many coats of your special paint to cover the whole pumpkin.

Paint + Dry

I started with the bottoms facing up and sprayed quickly and in short spurts, attempting to prevent paint drips or runs. After about an hour, I checked on them and they were dry. I flipped over the pumpkins and repeated the process with the top facing up.

In a separate area, I spray painted my leaves gold. I waited about 30 minutes in between coats flipping them to make sure all sides were covered.

Replace the Stems / Remove the Tape

Once they were completely dry, I popped my stems back into the painted pumpkins. If you opted to use painter’s tape, you can carefully peel it off here.

Optional: If you also want to paint your stem, I would use a brush and acrylic paint to avoid messing up your pumpkin’s new paint job. If you want to spray paint it, you could always tape off your pumpkin but you’ll have to do this very carefully.

Glue + Style

With a bit of hot glue, glue your leaves to your painted pumpkins in your desired spot. I wanted mine to rest near the stems. Let this dry for about 5-10 minutes and you’ll be ready to decorate your home for autumn! If you’re getting married and want some pumpkins that match your theme, this is also the perfect DIY!

Are you using painted pumpkins in your home decor this year?
