Potpourri is a beautiful mixture of natural ingredients, like dried flower petals, herbs, and spices that are placed in an open bowl or sachet.
Rather than using aerosol sprays or room sprays, potpourri is a non-toxic and unrefined way to add a refreshing scent to any space. It adds visual interest to any dish or vessel it’s stored in and provides an air or pleasantness to anyone within the space.
There are three methods to creating dried potpourri…
Dry in the sun
If you have a sunny soaked, warm window, you can dry your flowers on a windowsill. Depetal your flowers and greenery then place them on a tray or dish and each day, flip the petals over. Do this until the petals feel slightly brittle. It will take a couple of weeks before they’re ready.
Bake in the oven
To expedite the drying of your florals and greenery, place them on a baking sheet with parchment paper and put them in the oven at 200 degrees for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. The longer you leave the flowers in the oven, the more browning will occur so monitor closely.
Hang them upside down
Hanging your flowers is a perfect way to dry them. Hanging them upside down, also allows the petals to retain their shape if you are aiming for a chunky potpourri sachet. Note: this process takes quite a bit longer. Simply leave your florals on the stems, and hang them upside down. Once the flowers are dry, you can remove them from the stems. This could take anywhere from a couple weeks to a month.

Add Scent(s)
Using essential oils of your choice, add in a few drops into your dried potpourri and mix around. Add more drops as you see fit, but be careful not to saturate the mix. I used eucalyptus and lavender oil which I purchased on Amazon.

If you’re into potpourri sachets, I’m actually selling these on my Etsy shop. Each sachet features petals and eucalyptus leaves hand-plucked by myself, dried, and mixed with a blend of eucalyptus and lavender essential oils for a calming and relaxing scent. Put these bags in your closet or drawers, or keep one within reach when you need a little aromatherapy boost. This is the perfect gift for bridesmaid proposal boxes, wedding favors, mother’s day presents, birthday favors, etc.
Any purchases on my Etsy shop allow me to continue working on future DIY projects and creating additional items/listings in my Etsy shop. I very much appreciate all of you who support me on Etsy. I also appreciate those following me on Instagram, and those reading my blog week after week. Your support may come in various forms but all of them mean so much to me.
