Creating your own basket wall doesn’t have to be expensive.
After creating some sweet fiber wall art, I decided to focus on the other side of the bedroom. I’ve wanted to do a basket wall somewhere in my home and knew my bedroom would be a wonderful place for it.
For starters, the best way to find baskets it thrifting – people donate baskets all the time! You can usually get them in sets, too. To build my collection, I thrifted a few of my own and made some spiraled rope baskets and a rope border mirror. My mom was also kind enough to give me some baskets she’s collected from her trips back to the Philippines. She even gave me some fans that I thought would look great on the wall.
Things You’ll Need:
-
- Baskets
- Hammer
- Nails
- Picture Hanging Strips
Step One:
View your space and get an idea of what you’re working with. It’s important to visualize your basket wall before you start. You can get an idea of what sizes, colors and patterns, you want to use or potentially exclude.
Please excuse the state of my room. I was also giving my bedroom a makeover and I was moving things around…all while binge-watching NCIS. 🤣
Step Two:
Okay, you’ve seen your space– it’s time to start planning. I put my baskets down on the floor, laying them out in the format I wanted to see on the wall. I wasn’t really concerned about spacing, mainly because I had a puppy closing in on me, ready to pounce on my baskets at any moment. (You can sort of see her in the pic below.)
Step Three:
Now it’s time to put your baskets up! I used a hammer and nails to hang a few but I also used picture hanging strips. I didn’t want to poke too many holes in my walls. If you use the picture hanging strips, make sure you press and hold firm against the basket and again on the wall to ensure a strong hold.
Pro Trip: Go with the flow on this one. The pattern you intend on will likely change when you start hanging the baskets. Most importantly, just have fun.
I started with the basket tray. From there, I held up baskets and visualized where I thought they should go. Once I found the perfect spot, I hung the it. As you can tell, the basket wall isn’t complete but since we are still in quarantine I won’t be able to finish it for a while. Nevertheless, I think it looks great already!
One of my pet peeves about the room was how boring and small it felt, despite the cathedral ceiling. This decorative wall draws your eyes up and gives you the feeling of a more spacious room. I’m glad I did this – it balances out my bedroom and also makes me very happy! I love waking up and seeing them in the mornings.
