Things I’m Loving – Indoor Plants

It’s no secret that I have a love for plants – Problem is, I could never keep one alive for long.

It’s frustrating caring for a plant just to see it get sick and wither away. Not going to lie, I may have shed a tear once or twice over an indoor plant baby. I was particularly saddened over the loss of a Yucca cane that I overwatered. #RootRotKills

I’ve also killed my fair share of succulents and kitchen herbs so for a while I gave up on greenery.  I lived the last year with only two plants in my home: Aloe Vera and Tiger Tooth Aloe. They’re low-maintenance and incredibly resilient…and I may have forgotten to water them a couple of times, but they persevered.

Where am I going with all this? Yes – my indoor plant obsession. Well, it started when I deep cleaned my home in preparation for the new year. I got rid of clutter, placing old things in the attic, investing in organizational items and vowing to practice tidiness. Once my home was clean and spotless, I decided to add some greenery into the mix, but this time, I knew I would take plant care seriously.

My Plants

I reached out for recommendations from my plant-loving friends, sought their advice, consulted good ol’ YouTube University, went out to Home Depot and purchased a Sansevieria (snake plant). Over the course of the last three weeks I slowly added to my indoor plant collection:

  • Yucca Cane Tree – I will not overwater this one!
  • 3 more Sansevierias
  • English Ivy – which I separated into 4 individual planters
  • A mini Sago Palm
  • 1 tiny Polka Dot plant – perfect for a terrarium or cloche
  • An Air Plant
  • 1 Maidenhair Fern
  • A Marble Queen Pothos
  • and 1 Benjamina Starlight Ficus tree

It’s important to note that while Lowe’s or Home Depot is great for the wallet, a few of my plants did come with issues from overwatering in-store. Local nurseries are typically a great place to pick up healthy indoor plants and I recommend going there if you are willing to pay a bit more.

I keep a record of the care and conditions that each of my plant babies needs so I can ensure they thrive. I also purchased necessary tools like misters, a watering can, neem oil, indoor plant food, and a moisture measure. Naturally, I raided the planter section of Home Goods and snagged some stylish planters for my indoor plants.

Natural Mood Booster

There’s something beautiful about coming home after a stressful day and decompressing with plants. It’s strange – I’ve struggled with stress and anxiety these last few years and indoor plants have helped put me at ease. I’ve even read studies that say that plants can make you happier and boost your mood and I feel like it’s so true! I look forward to waking up earlier and tending to them and coming home and seeing how much they’ve grown – that ivy grows fast!

I’m not a professional, but let me know if you guys want to see plant care breakdowns for any of my plants. I’m happy to share everything I’ve learned so far.

What is your favorite indoor plant?
