One’s junk is another one’s treasure.
Before the pandemic started, I was at Goodwill and found this wooden ice bucket. It was so unique, and honestly reminded me of swashbuckling pirates, so I bought it. (Yes, I have a strange obsession with pirates.) Almost as soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to turn this into a couple of DIY ice bucket planters.
The Wooden Bucket
Turning this into a planter was simple and didn’t take much to thrift flip it. It’s made of wood, so planting straight in isn’t an option. Instead, I decided to use it as a decorative pot. I placed rocks at the bottom of the bucket so water or moisture from the pot doesn’t directly sit on the wood.
I placed a ‘crimson princess’ hoya inside it. Sadly, I didn’t catch that this hoya was sickly when I purchased it. After I brought it home, I quarantined it from my other plant babies. That’s when I discovered it had bugs and mold growing on the roots. I have been trying to rehabilitate it and I’m hoping it will grow into a beauty. Hoya’s are typically draping house plants so eventually the leaves will grow over my DIY ice bucket planter and look gorgeous.
The Wooden Lid
I decided to turn the lid into a hanging planter for my xerographica air plant. It was pretty simple actually – just drill a few holes and insert your rope or twine! I decorated it with a DIY tassel and thinly braided twine, which I hot glued to the rim of the lid.
Air plants pull moisture from the air to keep hydrated, so I added a seashell filled with water to add some extra humidity.
