If you could see inside my linen closet, you’d shake your head.
I have throw blankets galore and need more space to put them away. I was gifted this ottoman over ten years ago but it was always an eyesore. At one point, I sewed a cover for it so I wouldn’t have to look at it (it never matched my furniture). Needing storage, I decided to give it a little makeover so this DIY ottoman can be functional and attractive enough to display in my home!
I’ve seen many of these cube ottomans during past thrift store expeditions but I don’t see too many of these in commercial stores anymore. I did find a similar one from Target, but the price is pretty steep. If you have one already, or if you happen upon one the next time you go thrifting, you can easily give this easy makeover!
Things You’ll Need:
-
- Faux Leather Fabric (similar here)
- Paintable Wallpaper
- Staple Gun
- Scissors
- Mod Podge Glue
Step One:
For starters, I took the wheels off because those things are h-i-d-e-o-u-s. Then I wiped the whole thing down to make sure it was squeaky clean.
I purchased unpasted wallpaper so I used Mod Podge to adhere it to the ottoman. I started on one side carefully applying glue to the full surface. Then I pressed the wallpaper down, keeping the edges as straight as possible. Once the glue started drying I rotated the cube to the next panel and started the process over again until all sides were covered, including the bottom.
Step Two:
I couldn’t figure out how to remove the blue fabric from the lid without completely destroying the lid’s integrity so I opted to place the faux leather over the top. I used the staple gun to nail the fabric to the wood bottom. Full disclosure: I think I overdid it with the staples.😅 I just needed to be sure the fabric would stay lol.
Step Three:
Once everything is dry, fill the interior with blankets, books or whatever your heart desires, and put the lid back on! That’s it – it’s so simple to re-create this DIY ottoman.
I’ve been keeping this ottoman at my vanity and using it as a small bench. I’m glad I kept the original fabric under the leather because it adds extra ‘cush’ for my tush.😆It also ties in nicely with my bedroom furniture!
