In need of more space for my beauty products, I took to IKEA.
That’s when I found this black metal nightstand. I don’t typically opt for metal furniture pieces but I knew I could do a quick DIY and update it. You can actually update a lot of IKEA furniture to make it more unique!
Currently, I don’t have a designated place to do my makeup so I bought this nightstand to be my makeshift beauty shelves. It doesn’t quite go with my bathroom decor right now, but once I find space for a vanity, I can eventually turn this IKEA hack into a planter stand!
What You’ll Need:
-
- Knarrevik from IKEA
- White marble contact paper
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Heat Gun or Hair Dryer
- Optional: Super Glue
Step One:
Measure out the area of the shelves you want to cover and measure that out on contact paper. I made sure to measure the sides of the shelves so it looks like one cohesive marble shelf. From there, cut the contact paper along your measurements.
Step Two:
Carefully peel and stick contact paper to the surface, starting with the edges. You can use your ruler or a credit card to smooth out any bubbles. If you do have bubbles appearing that can’t be smoothed out, take a thumbtack or needle and poke a small hole in the center of the air bubble. If the edges of the contact paper are not adhering, that’s okay.
Step Three:
For the sides that are not sticking to the surface, use a hairdryer or a heat gun. *You could opt for super glue here, but you may see bumps under the contact paper.* With the hair dryer or heat gun, warm up the contact paper and then pull and hold it in place. The heat will allow you to contour the shelf, allowing the contact paper to mold itself to the surface as it cools. Take your time on this step.
Step Four:
Once your shelves are looking perfect it’s time to put it together. Assemble your furniture using the manufacturer instructions provided in the box. Now you are ready to decorate!
If you are looking to recreate this project, please be aware that IKEA is currently closed in the US due to COVID-19. If you have similar IKEA shelves at home, you can always try elevating them with this hack! I hope everyone is continuing to stay safe out there.
